Calling Lady Generals Soccer Pictures

We need your help! Our Lady Generals Soccer Program needs you to share any player or team photo taken from this season with our Legacy Core LEADERs. Through this photo collection process, we will create a picture slideshow to present at our end-season-celebration. Suggested pictures include on- and off-the-field photos of players and/or community supporters. You can add your photos by uploading them from your computer into the folder link below or you can simply text these images to either Cameron Boone, Joanna Whitis, or Claire Hicks (see numbers below) and they will ensure to add them to our collection. Thanks!

End of the Celebration and Logistics

As another season has drawn to a close, there are a variety of end of the season items that need to be addressed.

First, we will host an end of the season celebration to commemorate our season and our Lady Generals Soccer community. This celebration will occur on Sunday, November 13th from 3:00-4:30PM at TNHS Cafeteria. The event will center around connecting with one another, celebrating the achievements of our players, and reflecting upon our season. To ensure its success, I will need the following support from our community:

  1. Legacy Core members, we will meet after school Wednesday, November 9 from 3:15-4:00 to help plan and organize our end of season celebration. Please reference this document to begin brainstorming and to view areas where you can support.
  2. The banquet will be a potluck meal. The meat will be purchased and bought by the booster club, and then all players will be responsible for bringing at least one side dish to support the meal. We will be having fried chicken and will plan on eating at 3:00PM (my apologies for the odd time, the boys soccer team is hosting their banquet from 5:30-7:00 on Sunday as well). Please click on this document to view the item that we have requested you to bring. If you have a specialty dish that you would like to bring, please feel free to make adjustments to the sheet.
  3. Communicating your attendance - all players or community supporters, please communicate your banquet attendance through this Google Form
  4. Uniform Collection - all player uniforms should be properly washed, bagged with its player name on it, and returned to Coach Martin by Sunday, November 13th (banquet date). When uniforms were distributed at the beginning of the season it was documented what pieces of the TNHS uniform was given to you to use; all parts of your uniform should be returned to Coach Martin. Players who fail to return their uniform or parts of their uniform by Sunday, November 13th will have a charge placed on their student account until it is returned or purchased. We will offer a uniform purchase deal for any senior player who wishes to keep parts of their uniform for personal memorabilia. Obviously, any part of the uniform which is kept by a senior player will need to be replaced before the following season and therefore the purchase price of your uniform will be equal to the purchase price of a replacement jersey. According to BSN Sports, the prices to replace pieces of our uniforms are listed below (click on this link - topsshorts - if you wish to view a purchase receipt from additional uniforms that we ordered three years ago). Seniors that wish to purchase part of their uniform should return all pieces you do not wish to keep in a individual bag with your name on to Coach Martin before the banquet. For the pieces you wish to keep, total your purchase and make a check out to TNHS - Girls Soccer and bring this to the banquet.
    • Short-sleeve tops = $60.00 per top
    • Long-sleeve tops = $67.50 per top
    • Shorts = $32.75 per short
  5. Character Awards - We will honor certain individuals for demonstrating outstanding character throughout the course of the season. All players will have an opportunity to vote for student-athletes who best exemplified the traits described for each award. We will have one representative from both the JV and Varsity teams be recognized for each award. Before you vote, please read the descriptions for each award below so you know what we're looking for. Varsity team members will vote for the varsity awards, while JV team members will vote for the JV awards. If you were a dual player, then you will vote for both.
    • Higher Purpose Award - A player who exemplifies these characteristics played for a higher purpose. They did not use the game to just compete and win, but they used the game to help prepare them for life. They sought excellence in all areas - in the classroom, outside of school in their community, as a person, and as a player.
    • Community Award - A player who exemplifies these characteristics has invested a lot of energy into building the community within our program. They reached out to develop relationships with ALL of our teammates. They reached out to help support others on and off of the field. They were a consistent positive life force - someone others wanted to be around.
    • Team over Individual Award - A player who exemplified these characteristics ALWAYS placed the needs of the team above their own needs. They would sacrifice their own self-interest for the greater good of the team. They played for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back of the jersey.
    • Pursuit of Excellence Award - A player who exemplified these characteristics consistently looked to themselves for ways to improve. They consistently worked to get better by focusing on the small things. They never settled for "that was good enough". They pushed the tempo in practice and they constantly pushed themselves and the team to improve.
    • LEADER Award - A player who exemplified these characteristics was a true LEADER on our team and to our program. Others looked up to this person and they were a player who you would follow. They represented and lived our LEADER values on a consistent basis.
    • JV PLAYER AWARDS - Vote Here      VARSITY PLAYER Awards - Vote Here
Stay tuned for additional posts if necessary. Please reach out to me or a Legacy Core member if you need assistance completing the tasks outlined above.

VOTE for End of Season Banquet Date

As our season has drawn to a close, we will be hosting an end of the season celebration to commemorate our season and our Lady Generals Soccer community. After some consideration and consultation, it makes sense to push our banquet back a week to give our community members enough time to make accommodations. So, the celebration will be held on either Friday, November 11th or Sunday, November 13th. Please click on the link below to vote for the date of your preference. All players need to converse with their parents about these options AND then vote for the date of their choice. The voting window will close Sunday, October 30th at midnight, and our banquet date will be announced Monday morning. Your options are listed below:

Potential Banquet Dates:
Friday, November 11 from 6:00-7:30 at TNHS
Sunday, November 13 from 3:00-4:30 at TNHS (Boys Soccer has Cafe reserved from 5:30-7:00 for their end of season celebration)

Upcoming Events - Including Senior Night Preparations

During our last regular season home game, our TNHS Athletics Department and our girls soccer program will create a time and space to honor our senior girls for the gifts and commitments that they have contributed to our program. There are a number of items that are occurring behind the scene to make it a memorable night. However, we are requesting our soccer community's support with a few items.

First, we are requesting the presence of all underclassmen players (middle school, freshman, sophomore, and junior players) to join in on creating "run-throughs" for senior night. The run-throughs were a huge hit last year as they help build enthusiasm for the game and they're a joy to watch the girls run through them. The girls will work together to decorate these poster run-throughs on Friday, September 30 from 3:30-5:30PM at TNHS in Mr. Hoyes Art Room. (Note: there will NOT be practice held during this time).

Next, the TNHS Lady Generals Soccer Team will host a senior night meal for our senior girls and coaches. We are requesting underclassmen parents to bring ANY of the items listed on the document below. The meal is set to begin at 4:30, and therefore any food items would need to be dropped off at 4:00. We would also like for 2-3 parents to assist in the setup and cleanup of this event. Please sign-up on THIS DOCUMENT or contact one of the group LEADERs if you can bring an item or if you would like to assist. Parent LEADERs in charge of this event include Carole Bryan (502)827-4604, Tiffany Wimsett (502)827-4674, and Sherry Thompson Meador (502)827-1149.

Finally, on a different note, tonight's boys-girls doubleheader match is also Future Generals Night! Young athletes who participate in youth soccer within our area will be highlighted and celebrated between tonight's games. Youth soccer players who wear their youth uniform to the game tonight will get free admission (parents must pay admission) and they will be celebrated between our matches. Please help spread the word and let's work together to build enthusiasm for the sport. Thank you for your support.

Taylor Martin Memorial Game

Nearly one year ago, our community lost a dear friend, teammate, and Original General as Taylor Martin was taken from us on September 10th, 2015. Taylor embodied the notion of LEADERship through peacemaking, CARE, and friendship. Through collaboration with our Legacy Core team and our TNHS LEADERship team, we have identified our home match vs. Nelson County on September 12, 2016 as the "Taylor Martin Memorial Game" to honor and celebrate her life.

We intend to make September 12th a day of remembrance and celebration as we have a variety of unique activities planned for that afternoon. First, we intend to make this a community celebration and we want to invite all members of our community to this event. Our school community will be hosting House Tailgate to create a space for students and community members to gather and connect before the game. The House Tailgate is planned to take place next to the tennis courts and is set to begin at 5:00PM. TNHS plans to provide and grill hamburgers and hot dogs for the tailgate, however, a few other items have been requested to ensure its success. If you would like to bring something (soft drinks, water, cups, chips, pop-up tent, etc) to the House Tailgate, please add your item or suggestion to this document.

Finally, we have established a scholarship foundation to honor Taylor's life. The Taylor Martin Memorial Scholarship Foundation seeks to raise $10,000 contributing to an annual $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior over the next 10 years. This scholarship will be awarded to a senior female that represents peacemaking, CARE, and LEADERship. ALL proceeds from the September 12th game and its aligned events will go directly to the scholarship foundation.

Next Steps for our Lady Generals Community
  1. Please help spread the word about the Taylor Martin Memorial Game. All proceeds from the game and its events will go directly to the scholarship foundation. Game times for the September 12th game are JV - 6:00PM, Varsity - 7:30PM.
  2. Review the House Community Tailgate list and contribute items as you see fit.
  3. We also need two additional community partners to work concessions during the varsity game and two ball boys/girls to support during the JV game. Please add your name to this document if you wish to support.
  4. Please reach to Coach Martin if you additional comments or questions.
  5. Special thanks to Senior and Legacy Core Member Claire Hicks for helping organize this special event!

Home Game Work Schedule

We have 5 home games remaining on our schedule and we want to ensure our community members and guests enjoy their experience at Thomas Nelson. In order for our home games to run efficiently and effectively we need your support! With all the moving parts in place, it takes a village to build a successful program. So, we request that at least one parent representative work AT LEAST one work shift per child on the team.

You will find there are still several openings in our schedule and thus plenty of opportunity to provide your support. I request each parent to complete these steps:
  1. Review our current work schedule (CLICK HERE).
  2. Sign up for a position and time slot if you have not already done so. Simply click in the box you wish to sign up for and type your name and the name of your child in the box (example: Jeannie Watkins - Amelia). If you are not a fan of Google Docs then simply text Coach Martin and I'll update the document with your request.
  3. Print your work schedule. Remember your date and provide your service for the duration of the time slot.
Again, thank you for your support!

Kick-off Events and Celebrations

Good afternoon and Happy Sunday! This blog post will unveil our 2016 Match Schedule and will preview numerous upcoming program events and activities. With a number of items on our agenda, I'll get right to it...

2016 Match Schedule
I couldn't be more excited for slate of games featured in our 2016 game schedule. Our schedule is full of tough competition that will challenge our Lady Generals and will force us to continue to grow. Highlights of our schedule include 6 district games (each district opponent will now play each other twice during the regular season), our first home match is a scrimmage vs. Eastern on August 12, and participation in two regular season tournaments - I-65 Battle of the Turfs in Elizabethtown and the Visit Danville Classic at Boyle County. Continue to stay up-to-date with our team activities by viewing our Living Team Calendar (changes occur weekly).

With that being said, our program plans to celebrate our Lady Generals and the official start of our season in a variety of ways over the next couple weeks. Please see the list below for an official description of upcoming events.

Wednesday, August 3 - Scrimmage at South Oldham HS
Our first scrimmage will take place at South Oldham HS - JV kicks off at 6:00PM, Varsity to follow at 7:45PM. Our team will be taking a bus. All players are required to ride the bus to the field with the team but may ride home with a parent as long as they have written permission. Bus to South Oldham will depart from TNHS around 4:00PM. Please click here for directions to the field.

Friday, August 5 - Back to School Bash
Come meet the LEADERs of TNHS and celebrate with our community the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Open house will kick off B2SB where Generals can get their new class schedule, meet their TNHS LEADERs, obtain locker combinations, and much more. Open house will occur inside the school from 5:00-7:00PM. Festivities will then transition to TNHS football field at 7:00PM where Generals and community members can participate in a variety of games and activities. Please visit the Lady Generals Soccer section.

Saturday, August 6 - Soccer Field Clean-Up
The Generals and Lady Generals soccer teams partner together to clean-up and prepare our soccer facilities for the upcoming season. Community Partners will clean our concessions, pressbox, bleachers, sidewalks, etc, and will line and paint our soccer game field. We will need approximately 10 girls soccer volunteers and 10 boys soccer volunteers to support the event. Clean-up and field-lining will start around 8:00AM, please contact Coach Martin if you are interested.

Sunday, August 7 - Kickoff Celebration
Lady Generals Soccer will host a kickoff celebration on August 7 from 5:00-6:30PM in TNHS cafeteria. The celebration will feature food, coach's introduction and message, excerpts from the Legacy Core, and logistic paperwork items. Stay tuned for dish requests later this week. We ask both players and parents attend this event.

Wednesday, August 10 - Navy-White Scrimmage
We will host our first annual inner-squad scrimmage on August 10. The scrimmage will introduce our girls to our community as they compete against each other. Junior varsity players will play an 8v8 match starting at 5:30PM, followed by a 8v8 varsity match at 6:30PM. Admission is FREE.

Thursday, August 18 - TNHS Fall Sports Showcase
In our first annual TNHS Sports Showcase, all fall sports teams will gather from 4:00-7:00PM on August 18th to take team and player pictures, sign team contracts, speak with local media, and celebrate our TNHS fall sports teams. More details to come at a later time.

Finally, I would like to thank our Legacy Core leaders as they have and will continue to play an important role in organizing and running these events, nice work ladies!

Still to come this week...
Tuesday - Soccer uniform delivery. Girls will be given team uniforms for the upcoming season.
Tuesday - JV and varsity team reveal. Girls will be notified which squads they will be playing on for Wednesday's scrimmage. Please reach out if you have questions or concerns.

July Calendar and Tryouts

Good morning, the Lady Generals Soccer team will be gearing back up for the start of our July practice sessions on Monday, July 11th. I hope everyone has had a restorative summer break and dead period and is ready to rock-n-roll for the 2016 season. This blog post will provide updates to our July team calendar.

July Schedule
Our Official Team Calendar will continue to provide stakeholders with an overview of what to expect in the months ahead. The calendar is living in that dates and times are always subject to change. Therefore, my recommendation is to not print this calendar; instead stay informed with the most up-to-date calendar by accessing the links on our blog. Click HERE to access our calendar.

Overview of Next Two Weeks
July 11 - July 14 (M-T-W-Th) - Open Practice Sessions. These practices remain open to all girls interesting in trying out for the team. Practice times are unique this week as they will occur in the from 6:00-8:00PM. My apologies for the last minute change in practice times. Also, starting Tuesday, July 12, specialized goalkeeper training will occur from 5:00-6:00PM. Girls interested in coming out for goalkeeper will be asked to attend both sessions.

July 18th and July 19th - Tryouts. Tryouts are mandatory and are open to all interested players. Sessions occurring this week will shift to our morning time slots. Goalkeepers will train from 8:00-9:00AM, all players will train from 9:00-11:00AM. On Tuesday, July 19, coaching staff will contact all interested players to inform them about their status of making or not making the team. On Wednesday, July 20, only players selected will continue to practice with the team. Practices will remain in the mornings until the first week of school.

Logistics
  1. Make arrangements to attend upcoming practice sessions. All players should bring cleats, shin guards, indoor shoes or tennis shoes everyday for practice.
  2. Bring an up-to-date physical to Coach Martin ASAP. I must have these for my records.
  3. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Next Steps Entering Dead Period

As the first week of open practices concluded on Thursday, I couldn't be more excited for the upcoming fall season. Throughout the week, I witnessed players with high energy, pushing themselves to improve, and players supporting each other. These core pieces will be essential to maintain when we hit the ground running in July.

So, what are the next steps for our program? First, we will not meet or practice again until Monday, July 11. Our current plans are to host open practices throughout the week of July 11 (M-T-W-Th-F) from 9:00-11:00AM. Note, these dates and times are subject to change. You will be notified well in advance of any changes. Open practices are again voluntary and are open to any girl interested in trying out for the team. Official team tryouts will begin on Monday, July 18; these practice sessions will be mandatory for girls wanting to join the team.

To summarize our next steps, players and parents should follow this list of links and action steps.
  1. Living Team Calendar
  2. What is your level of fitness and will you be prepared for July practices?
    • June Open Practice Fitness Marks - this link includes the running marks of players who attended open practice sessions. Compare these numbers to the guideline goals established on the Fitness Program (linked below). Where do you need to be in order to be an "impact JV player"?
    • Fitness Program - follow this running program and guidelines to continue to get better.
    • Fitness Running Groups - click on this link to view when and where groups of players are meeting to run. Please update this if you start a group.
  3. Physical Forms - ensure that you have an active, up-to-date physical before July 11. Players without an active physical on file by July 11 will NOT be able to practice.

Kicking Off - 2016

Lady Generals Soccer is about to be in full swing! Although the 2016 fall sports season doesn't officially kick-off until July 15, the Lady Generals Soccer team will have several open practice sessions to start preparing for the upcoming season. These practice sessions are open to any girl interested in playing soccer at TNHS. Additionally, these sessions are completely voluntary as players will not be penalized for missing an open practice session. However, participation and involvement is highly encouraged. Tryouts for the team will not begin until the week of July 18.

Open practice sessions will start Monday, June 13 and will occur from 9:00-11:00AM at Thomas Nelson High School. We will host open practice from June 13-16 (Monday-Thursday). Players should make sure they arrive by 8:50, meet at TNHS athletic field house, and bring their cleats, shin guards, and flats (indoors or tennis shoes). Click here for our official team calendar (Note: I would not print this calendar as all times and dates are subject to change. Simply click on the live link to view the most up-to-date calendar).

Players should be aware that when we start practice and tryouts officially on July 18 that they should ENTER our pre-season in-shape. Our first official practice will not be fun for those players who are not fit. I recommend that you start running today and work to increase your intensity up until July 18. To help you prepare for our pre-season fitness tests, I've created a Fitness Plan Program. The program details what running marks you should be hitting when July 18 rolls around, communicates your fitness levels from last season, and it describes a running program for you to follow. Click on this presentation to view to the fitness program. Contact Coach Martin if you have any questions.

Finally, please ensure you have an up-to-date physical on file with Coach Martin. Schedule your physical ASAP, have the doctor fill out this form, and bring it to practice upon completion. I will keep a copy for myself and then make a copy for you to keep.

Summary With Important Links:
  1. Official Lady Generals Soccer Calendar - includes all important dates, it's living
  2. Fitness Program - start running today
  3. KHSAA Physical Form - make sure this is up-to-date

Preparing for 2016

Lady Generals Soccer Community,

Good afternoon, I hope everyone has had a restorative winter break following the conclusion of our 2015 season. Temperatures are warming up, days are getting longer, many players are in full swing with their spring activities, and with only 106 days until the official start of the 2016 soccer season, there are a number of planning and brainstorming items to address in the months ahead.

Coach Hurst, Coach Michael, and I are proud of the growth our program has experienced over the last four years, and we are excited about the potential our program possesses. Heading into the 2016 season, we are looking to continue building upon concepts aligning with our TNHS athletic mission of Community, Care, and LEADERship. In order for this work to align, there are a number of logistical and planning items that will take place.

Next Steps and Future Agenda Items

  1. Uniform Return - All players should return their full TNHS uniform to Coach Martin for inventorying purposes. Expect an updated list of who has and hasn't returned their uniform in a future blog post. Any senior who wishes to keep part of their TNHS uniform for keepsake purposes may do so by paying for the cost of a replacement piece.
  2. Legacy Core 2016 - Student-Athletes who wish to take on essential leadership roles within our program will have an opportunity to apply after spring break. Once the Legacy Core team is announced, we will begin meeting regularly.
  3. Parent Partnership Meetings - Coming soon! Meetings to take place following spring break.
  4. Lady Generals 2016 Match Schedule - Official release of our 2016 schedule is coming soon!

I'm grateful for our continued support. Go Lady G's.

Sincerely,

Alex Martin
